Burcott Mill

On the 22nd of September, Miles and Joe and Mrs. Crowter went to Burcott mill, near Wells. We went to see wheat get ground up into flour.

Burcott Mill is one of two working water mills in Somerset , there has been a mill on this site for 1000 years. Water from this river powers the mill.

Two mill stones grind the wheat together making flour. They are made of concrete and weigh three quarters of a tonne each. This idea was introduced by the Romans, 2000 years ago.

One of the things that we learnt about was where the saying “chatterbox” come from. During the milling process, the grain drops through a wooden box which is shaken by a metal spindle. This is called “chattering the grain”.

We have been given a bag of flour which we are going to use to make a cake or bread and these will be put into a competition later this month.
